Obverse
On the obverse, the 2025 1 Kilo Silver Koala Coin features King Charles IIIs first official portrait for Australian currency. Designed by Dan Thorne in 2024, this left-facing effigy follows tradition by showing the King without a crown, similar to past Commonwealth coinage.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features an image of a koala resting on a gum tree branch. While koalas are commonly seen lounging in trees, they are highly adapted climbers with strong limbs and sharp claws that help them move between branches with ease. Their diet consists mainly of eucalyptus leaves, which they can digest thanks to specialized bacteria that break down the plants toxic compounds.
History
Despite their solitary nature, koalas have a unique way of maintaining their territories. Males use loud, deep vocalizations to assert dominance, communicate with potential mates, and avoid physical confrontations. These distinctive calls can be heard over long distances, especially during breeding season.
