Obverse
The obverse design of the 2025 1 Kilo Silver 550th Anniversary of Michelangelo Coin displays a portrait of the artist. Born in Caprese, Michelangelos talent was recognized early. He trained with painter Domenico Ghirlandaio before studying sculpture under the patronage of Lorenzo de Medici. His early works, such as the Piet and David, demonstrated his ability to bring lifelike emotion and detail to stone.
Reverse
For the reverse of the 2025 Republic of Italy Silver 550th Anniversary of Michelangelo Coin, the design features the Creation of Adam from the Sistine Chapel. The famous image captures the moment before God gives life to Adam, represented by their nearly touching fingers. The gap between them is thought to express the idea that humanity can strive for, but never fully reach, divine perfection.
History
Though Michelangelo identified most strongly as a sculptor, his ceiling frescoes for the Sistine Chapel (15081512) stand among his greatest achievements. In his later years, he focused heavily on architecture, notably designing the dome of St. Peters Basilica in Rome. Known for his perfectionism and intense focus, Michelangelos work continues to influence generations of artists.
