Anchors have supported sailors and ships for thousands of years, with early examples showing up in societies dating back to around 2000 BCE. These early devices were often made from large stones with carved openings, later replaced by wooden structures weighted with stone or metal to improve their stability. Today, collectors can enjoy a tribute to that long maritime history with the 2025 1 oz Antique Samoa Silver Nautical Anchor Coins, now offered by BGASC.

Design

In the design of the 2025 Antique Samoa Silver Nautical Anchor Coin, youll see a modern anchor with a rope running through the top opening and wrapped around the bottom of the frame. Modern anchors come in many variations, from classic Admiralty designs to more specialized plow and fluke styles, each suited to different seabeds and vessel sizes. On the front of this anchor-shaped coin, youll also find the Samoan coat of arms.

History

Over time, anchor designs grew more advanced. The Greeks and Romans introduced iron flukes to help anchors grip the seabed more effectively, setting the groundwork for many of the models used in later centuries. A major improvement arrived in the early 1800s with the stockless anchor, created in Britain. Its ability to fit into a ships hawse pipe and be handled easily made it a major advantage for large ships traveling across expanding trade routes.
