Tasked with collecting breadfruit plants from Tahiti and delivering them to the West Indies, the ship was placed under the command of Lieutenant William Bligh. Modified for its botanical role, the ship departed England in December 1787 with a crew of 46. Though initially built for a modest purpose, the HMS Bountys name lives on as part of maritime legend. Obverse
The obverse of the 2025 1 oz Gold Bounty Coin displays an image of King Charles III. This left-profile portrait, designed by Jody Clark, shows His Majesty without a crown. This marks the Kings first appearance on coinage in this series.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2025 Pitcairn Islands Gold Bounty Coin is a depiction of the HMS Bounty. Originally named Bethia, the ship was renamed by the Royal Navy and adapted to carry plants. Measuring just 91 feet in length, it was a small merchant ship typical of the late 1700s.
History
The infamous mutiny on the Bounty saw Lieutenant Bligh and 18 loyal crew members cast adrift with limited supplies, including water, bread, rum, a sextant, and a compass. Despite these hardships, Bligh successfully navigated the launch on an incredible 47-day journey spanning 3,618 nautical miles to safety in Timor. This feat remains a remarkable story of survival and skill.
