Obverse
The obverse of the 2025 Proof Falkland Islands Silver King Penguin Coin features a left-facing portrait of King Charles III. Designed by Glyn Davies, this portrait is one of the first official representations of His Majesty on coins issued across the Commonwealth and British territories.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2025 1 oz Proof Silver King Penguin Coin, a group of King Penguins is depicted in their cold environment. One adult penguin is featured in the foreground, while more penguins, including a juvenile, are seen in the background. The Falklands are home to around 1,500 breeding pairs, with many nesting at Volunteer Point.
History
The King Penguin has a lengthy breeding cycle, lasting between 14 and 16 months. Because of this, a pair of penguins can only successfully raise two chicks every three years. Rather than building nests, they keep their single egg warm by balancing it on their feet and covering it with a specialized flap of abdominal skin called the brood patch. This adaptation enables them to endure the extreme sub-Antarctic climate while raising their young.
