History
During the Spanish-American War in 1898, Marines led the first American operation of the war by capturing Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in June 1898. This action created a forward base still used by the US Navy today. The Marines also participated in operations in the Philippines and Puerto Rico, reinforcing the Corps ability to carry out quick, expeditionary missions.
