The early coins honored famous gold nuggets discovered throughout Australia. In 1989, the design focus shifted to the kangaroo, and the series became known as the Australian Kangaroo. To recognize the 40th anniversary of the original release, The Perth Mint brings back the first reverse design in 2026. Currently, 2026 1/4 oz Proof Australian Gold 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coins are available from BGASC.

Each coin is packaged individually for collectors. It is housed in a clear capsule and set inside a black Perth Mint presentation box. You will also receive a themed shipper and a Certificate of Authenticity. Just 500 coins are offered in this specific packaging.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2026 Proof Australian Gold 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coin displays King Charles III. The portrait, created by Dan Thorne, shows His Majesty in left-profile relief without a crown as part of his first-generation effigy.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2026 1/4 oz Proof Gold 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coin is Stuart Devlins original Welcome Stranger design. The Welcome Stranger was discovered in Victoria in February 1869 by John Deason and Richard Oates and is still recognized as the largest gold nugget ever found. The coins design presents the nuggets outline with background rays and a faint image of Australia.
History
From 1986 through 1988, the series highlighted actual gold nuggets on its reverse designs. Among the featured discoveries were the Welcome Stranger, the Welcome Nugget, and the Hand of Faith. These designs emphasized the authentic look of the nuggets, helping connect the coins to Australias rich gold mining past.

When the subtotal of your purchase, including applicable discounts, is $199 or more, you receive free shipping for your entire order. In order to receive free shipping on purchases of $199 or more, you must live within the 50 US states. For orders less than $199, a $9.95 shipping fee applies. All products are discreetly packaged and shipped with full insurance included.
Most BGASC orders are shipped within one (1) business day of your payment clearing. Payments made via PayPal clear instantly. Bitcoin payments clear instantly once the transaction is confirmed. Credit Card and bank wire payments process within 1 business day. ACH and paper check payments take 3-5 business days. Once payments are processed, products are released to fulfillment for packaging and shipping.
All orders of $199 or more that are eligible for free shipping are, by default, shipped via a carrier of our choice (USPS or UPS). Depending on the contents and size of your purchase, you may be able to upgrade to a specific carrier during checkout.
For those orders of $999.99 or less, there is no need to sign for your package. However, you may select the option to require a signature at delivery if you want. This can be chosen and paid for at checkout. All orders of $1000 or more require a signature to complete delivery.
