{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Winnie the Pooh first appeared on December 24, 1925, in a story published in Londons Evening News by author A.A. Milne. The character was inspired by a stuffed bear owned by Milnes son, Christopher Robin. That bear was named after Winnipeg, a Canadian black bear from the London Zoo, along with Pooh, the name of a swan the family once knew. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this beloved character, the New Zealand Mint released a special set of commemorative coins. Today, 2026 1/4 oz Proof Niue Gold Disney Winnie the Pooh 100th Anniversary Coins are available from BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 2026 1/4 oz Proof Niue Gold Disney Winnie the Pooh 100th Anniversary Coin comes secured in a presentation box with a themed outer shipper. A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each coin. The proof strike creates frosted design details with smooth mirrored fields. The coins shape follows the outline of Winnie the Pooh holding a honey pot.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2026 Proof Niue Gold Disney Winnie the Pooh 100th Anniversary Coin features the Niuean coat of arms. The design includes native plant life at its center, surrounded by seashells. A Sovereign crown appears above the emblem, representing Niues ties to the Commonwealth.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2026 1/4 oz Proof Gold Winnie the Pooh 100th Anniversary Coin shows Pooh holding a honey pot. This image reflects Disneys interpretation introduced in the 1960s, which established his familiar rounded shape. The relaxed pose and soft details highlight Poohs friendly personality and fondness for honey.
History
The first Winnie-the-Pooh book was released in 1926 with illustrations by E.H. Shepard. These stories introduced readers to Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. Pooh is commonly shown as a soft, round bear with a calm and caring personality. While Disney later added his red shirt, the characters gentle nature has always remained the same.
