Obverse

The obverse of the 2026 American Gold Buffalo features the portrait of an indigenous figure. Fraser combined elements from several Native American individuals to create this right-facing profile. The portrait’s detailed appearance and recognizable style have made it one of the most enduring designs in the history of American coinage.

Reverse

On the reverse of 2026 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coins is a depiction of the American bison. The design was inspired by Black Diamond, a well-known resident of the Central Park Zoo. Fraser’s artwork presents the animal standing atop a raised mound, capturing the bison’s large frame and natural features.

History

The designs found on the Gold Buffalo come from James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel, first introduced in 1913. Fraser sought to create a distinctly American coin design and used inspiration from Native American leaders and wildlife familiar to the western United States. These historic images continue to serve as the foundation of the Gold Buffalo series.
