{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Santa Maria is remembered as Christopher Columbuss flagship from his 1492 crossing of the Atlantic, even though she was also the largest and slowest ship of the three-vessel group. This release introduces the first coin in a new series called Legends of the Seas. As the collection grows, it will feature ships that played a notable role in maritime history. Today, 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins are available at BGASC.
Highlights:
These 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins are packaged in presentation window boxes. The coins proof finish offers frosted design details and mirror-like fields. Selective colorization appears on the reverse, where the crosses on the sails are highlighted in red to help them stand out against the rest of the design.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2026 Proof Colorized Cook Islands Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins, the design features King Charles III. Shown in left-profile relief without a crown, the portrait has a simple, official appearance. This is a first-generation effigy of Charles III and was created by Dan Thorne.
Reverse
The reverse of 2026 1 oz Proof Colorized Silver Legends of the Seas Santa Maria Coins depicts Christopher Columbus alongside the Santa Maria under full sail. The ships story took a turn on Christmas Eve 1492 when she struck a coral reef off the coast of present-day Haiti and ran aground. With recovery impossible, Columbus had the timbers salvaged and used them to construct La Navidad, recognized as the first Spanish settlement in the New World.
History
First called La Gallega, the ships name reflected her Galician origins. Built in the carrack style, she was approximately 62 feet long and displaced around 100 tons. While Columbus reportedly favored the smaller Nia for its handling, he used the Santa Maria largely because her owner, Juan de la Cosa, was on board and served as master. The ship carried a crew of roughly 40 men during the voyage that would leave a lasting mark on world history.
