History
Elizabeth II was not meant to be queen at birth, but events in 1936 reshaped the monarchy when her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated. That decision placed her father on the throne and made Elizabeth the heir presumptive. During the Second World War, she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, where she learned to drive and worked as a mechanic. In 1947, she married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, and the two later had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward.
