Design
The obverse design of the 2026 Declaration of Independence Binns Engraving Gold Note features a detailed recreation of the historic engraving. It includes the text of the Declaration surrounded by portraits of key figures and the seals of the original states. Binns invested years into completing the engraving, and while it earned public attention, it also led to financial challenges. Today, his work is remembered as an early and influential artistic interpretation of the Declaration.
History
John Binns, a printer and political activist based in Philadelphia, created a detailed engraving of the Declaration of Independence in 1819. His work framed the document with decorative and symbolic elements, presenting it as both a historical text and a visual tribute. The design includes the seals of the original thirteen states, portraits of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Hancock, and imagery representing the ideals of freedom and independence.
