History
The Morgan Dollar entered production in 1878 as a result of the Bland-Allison Act, legislation signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes that required the federal government to purchase large quantities of domestic silver each month for coin production. The measure was strongly supported by mining interests in the West during a period when silver values were declining. The release of George T. Morgan’s new dollar design attracted considerable attention thanks to its fresh appearance and artistic style.
