{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin was first introduced in 2006 as the United States Mints first 24-karat gold proof release. It is produced as a collector-focused version of the American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin. Proof coins are made using a careful minting process in which blanks are specially prepared and struck multiple times. This process creates lightly frosted details that stand out against a mirrored surface for a clean finish. Right now, 2026-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins are available from BGASC.
Highlights:
Each 2026-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coin comes in a protective capsule and is accompanied by a US Mint presentation box. The box is enclosed in an outer shipper and includes a Certificate of Authenticity. The obverse includes dual date inscriptions of 1776 and 2026, along with the US Mints America 250 Liberty Bell emblem recognizing the countrys semiquincentennial.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2026-W Proof American Gold Buffalo features a right-profile image of an Indigenous figure. This design comes from James Earle Frasers original work for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Fraser created the portrait by blending features from three Indigenous individuals he observed in the early 20th century.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2026-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo Coin is a depiction of an American bison in left-profile. Designed by Fraser, the image is based on Black Diamond, a bison from the Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s. The bison is shown standing on a small mound with its head lowered as it grazes.
History
In addition to the America 250 celebration in 2026, the US Mint is also marking other key anniversaries. The American Eagle Series reaches its 40th year for both gold and silver coins, while the Gold Buffalo Series celebrates its 20th anniversary.
