Goldbacks are privately issued notes designed to function as a voluntary local currency. Each note contains a thin sheet of 24-karat gold sealed between layers of protective polyester, allowing the note to include a specific fractional amount of real gold. This construction makes Goldbacks one of the few forms of modern currency that contain physical gold within the note itself. First introduced in Utah, the Goldback program has expanded into several other states, combining precious metal ownership with the idea of everyday spending. The Idaho series represents the latest addition, featuring state-inspired artwork and denominations. Right now, 25 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes are available from BGASC.

Design

The 25 Idaho Goldback Gold Note design features a female scientist contributing to the development of the first nuclear reactor capable of generating electricity in the United States. On December 20, 1951, the Experimental Breeder Reactor I (EBR-I) near Arco, Idaho, produced usable electricity for the first time in history using nuclear power. This achievement marked an important advancement in both science and energy production. The early work conducted at EBR-I and the broader Idaho National Laboratory included contributions from many researchers, including women scientists who played key roles in nuclear research, safety analysis, and radiochemistry.

History

Scientia is the traditional personification of knowledge and intellectual study. In classical imagery, she appears as a calm and thoughtful figure whose presence reflects both the effort needed to pursue learning and the insight gained through it. The term scientia comes from Latin and translates as to know. She is commonly shown holding objects associated with learning and exploration, such as books, torches, or scientific instruments. Philosophers of the ancient world described scientia as a form of understanding that develops through careful study, logical reasoning, and observation of the world around us.
