Obverse
The obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Copper Round displays the complete Aztec Sun Stone design. Carved from a single piece of basalt, the original monument reflects the Aztec understanding of time, cosmology, and the natural world. Tonatiuh appears at the center with an extended tongue shaped as a sacrificial blade. Four rectangular panels surrounding the portrait symbolize earlier eras of creation. Outside these are the twenty named days of the Aztec calendar, followed by decorative circular rings featuring jade and turquoise-inspired patterns, celestial imagery, and radiant sun motifs. The entire design is enclosed by two fire serpents around the outer border.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 5 oz Aztec Calendar Copper Round is a right-facing image of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He became the final ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was the nephew of Moctezuma II. As Hernan Cortes advanced into the region, Cuauhtemoc directed the defense of Tenochtitln against the Spanish army. Though the Aztecs fought with determination, the capital was eventually captured. Cuauhtemoc was taken prisoner in August 1521 and later executed by the Spanish in 1525.
History
Created around 1479 CE during the rule of Emperor Axaycatl, the Aztec Sun Stone was carved by experienced artisans using stone tools to produce one of the finest surviving works of the pre-Columbian era. Rather than functioning only as a calendar, it represents the Aztec understanding of time, creation, and the important relationship between humanity and the sun god Tonatiuh, whose face forms the centerpiece of the design.
