{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Aztec Sun Stone stands as one of the most well-known works from ancient civilizations. Its detailed imagery and historical importance have made it a lasting design for bullion products. Today, this iconic artwork is recreated on precious metal rounds, allowing collectors to enjoy both its design and metal content. Struck in silver, these rounds offer a combination of bullion value and cultural significance. Right now, 5 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds are available online from BGASC.
Highlights:
These 5 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds arrive in protective plastic flips. The 5 oz option is the largest round in this collection and offers a heavier silver piece compared to smaller rounds, with only bars coming in larger sizes. Additional options in the series include fractional-ounce silver rounds and a copper version.
Obverse
The obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Round features the Sun Stone design. Carved from a single piece of basalt, the original stone represents the Aztec view of time and the cosmos. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun deity, with a blade-shaped tongue symbolizing ritual practices. Surrounding him are four sections representing earlier eras, followed by a ring showing the twenty day signs. The outer layers include decorative elements and end with two fire serpents that frame the design.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 5 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round shows a right-profile image of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He ruled as the final emperor beginning in 1520 and was related to Moctezuma II. As Spanish forces under Hernan Cortes advanced, Cuauhtemoc led the defense of Tenochtitlan. The city eventually fell in 1521, and he was later captured and executed in 1525.
History
After the Spanish conquest, much of Tenochtitlns central structures were destroyed as Mexico City was built over the site. Many cultural artifacts were lost or buried during this transition. The Sun Stone remained hidden underground for centuries before it was uncovered again.
