History

Before European arrival, Arizona was home to advanced indigenous groups such as the Hohokamwho built remarkable canal systemsand the Ancestral Puebloans, known for their enduring cliff dwellings. By the late 1600s, Spanish conquistadors and Jesuit missionaries, including Father Eusebio Kino, established missions that brought European farming, livestock, and religion, while also changing native life through colonization and disease.
