Often referred to simply as the sovereign, these coins are inspired by historic British circulating gold currency and continue to feature portraits of the nations monarch on the obverse each year. Each Great Britain Gold 1/4 Sovereign Coin offered here comes packaged in a protective plastic flip. The Royal Mint officially introduced the Quarter Sovereign in January 2009 as the smallest modern legal tender coin struck in Britain. While the Sovereign and Half Sovereign have historical ties to circulating British gold currency, the Quarter Sovereign has only been released as a collectible bullion issue and has never circulated in commerce.
Obverse
The obverse of Great Britain Gold 1/4 Sovereign Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. Since the Quarter Sovereign debuted in 2009, the series has showcased two different official portraits of Her Majesty. Coins issued between 2009 and 2015 display Ian Rank-Broadleys fourth-generation effigy of the Queen. Beginning in 2016, the Royal Mint introduced Jody Clarks fifth-generation portrait, showing Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief wearing the Royal Diadem crown. Coins issued since 2023 feature King Charles III in left-profile relief.
Reverse
On the reverse of Great Britain Quarter Sovereign Gold Coins is the familiar image of St. George defeating a dragon. This artwork is based on the original 1817 design from Benedetto Pistrucci, created with approval from King George III. The design depicts St. George mounted on horseback with a drawn sword as he rides over the dragon beneath him.
History
The Royal Mint strikes Great Britain Gold 1/4 Sovereign coins using 22-karat gold with a purity of .9170 fine gold. Although the coins are recognized as legal tender in Britain, the Quarter Sovereign is issued strictly as a commemorative bullion coin rather than a piece intended for circulation.

In order to receive free shipping on purchases of $199 or more, you must live within the 50 US states. For orders less than $199, a $9.95 shipping fee applies. Most BGASC orders are shipped within one (1) business day of your payment clearing. Payments made via PayPal clear instantly. Bitcoin payments clear instantly once the transaction is confirmed. Credit Card and bank wire payments process within 1 business day. ACH and paper check payments take 3-5 business days. Once payments are processed, products are released to fulfillment for packaging and shipping.
All orders of $199 or more that are eligible for free shipping are, by default, shipped via a carrier of our choice (USPS or UPS). Depending on the contents and size of your purchase, you may be able to upgrade to a specific carrier during checkout.
For those orders of $999.99 or less, there is no need to sign for your package. However, you may select the option to require a signature at delivery if you want. This can be chosen and paid for at checkout. All orders of $1000 or more require a signature to complete delivery.
