{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Collectors were pleased to see two classic US silver dollar designs return in 2021. That year marked 100 years since the last Morgan Dollar was issued and the introduction of the original Peace Dollar. To celebrate both anniversaries, the US Mint brought back these historic designs for modern collectors. Beginning in 2023, the Peace Dollar has been released each year as a collectible issue. Certified Peace Silver Dollar Coins are now available from BGASC.
Highlights:
All Peace Silver Dollar Coins offered here are graded Mint State 70. Coins with this grade are considered perfect examples, showing full original luster with no visible marks. Please be aware that this listing includes coins dated from 2023 onward. The exact year of issue and label style will vary and cannot be selected.
Obverse
The obverse design of the Peace Silver Dollar features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty created by Anthony de Francisci. Liberty wears a crown with radiant rays extending outward, symbolizing freedom and hope. De Francisci modeled Liberty after his wife, Teresa, resulting in a softer and more modern appearance than earlier Liberty designs.
Reverse
On the reverse of the Peace Silver Dollar is a bald eagle shown resting calmly while holding an olive branch. This peaceful imagery reflects the nations desire for harmony following World War I. The relaxed stance of the eagle differs from the more aggressive depictions used on earlier US silver dollar coins.
History
The Peace Dollar was first struck in December 1921, with production beginning at the Philadelphia Mint on December 28. The design was selected through a competition overseen by the Commission of Fine Arts, with Anthony de Francisci chosen to commemorate peace after World War I. The initial high-relief version of the coin featured deep detail but proved difficult for large-scale minting, leading to later design changes.
