{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Proof American Platinum Eagle is a distinctive release from the United States Mint and remains the only major bullion coin produced annually by the Mint. It is also the only coin within the American Eagle Series to feature a regularly changing design element. Between 1997 and 2017, the series displayed updated reverse designs that focused on the bald eagle and symbolic themes tied to American leadership and values. In 2018, the Mint shifted its approach by introducing changing obverse designs paired with a fixed reverse. Today, certified 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins are available through BGASC.
Highlights:
All 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins available from BGASC are graded PF or PR69. Coins with this designation retain full original mint luster and display no more than two very small imperfections. These minor flaws are typically limited to light contact marks or hairlines and are located outside the main focal areas of the design. The year of issue, specific design, and slab label style or color cannot be guaranteed, as all coins are selected at random.
Obverse
The obverse of Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins features a portrait of Liberty created by John Mercanti in 1997. The design presents Liberty with a calm but focused expression as she faces eastward across New York Harbor. This imagery reflects Libertys long-standing role as a symbol of freedom and opportunity for those who came to the United States seeking a new start.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin, collectors will find designs that change depending on the year of issue. During the years fractional coins were produced, the Mint released two themed design programs. The Vistas of Liberty series, issued from 1997 to 2002, featured various depictions of eagles in flight. This was followed by the Foundations of Democracy series from 2006 to 2008, which showcased symbolic imagery representing the three branches of the US federal government.
History
The American Platinum Eagle program was introduced in 1997, offering collectors and investors a choice between Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof finishes. These coins were struck in four different weights, including 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz platinum options. In 2008, the US Mint permanently discontinued all fractional-weight Platinum Eagles in both finishes. Production of the 1 oz Brilliant Uncirculated coin was also paused for several years before returning in 2014 and resuming steady annual mintages starting in 2016.
